Everything you need to know about President's Day 2024

David Hickey16 Aug 2024 - 10:40

Join us at the club from 1pm on August 25 for Piers Jenkins' first President's Day

Mill Hill Village members past and present, as well as friends of the club, are invited to attend the 2024 President's Day on Sunday, August 25.

The all-day free event, which takes place a day ahead of the August bank holiday, begins at 1pm and is a highlight in the club's summer cricketing calendar.

This will be Mill Hill Village Club President Piers Jenkins’ first President’s Day, having taken on the role on September 1 from Richard Downes, who spent four successful years in the role.

On the day, a President's XI selected by Jenkins (pictured above) will take on a Mill Hill Village Club XI selected by club captain Devraj Ray on the front pitch at our Burtonhole Lane home. An inter-club match is also expected to take place on the back pitch. Players can make their availability known through the usual WhatsApp channels.

Piers Jenkins: 10 things you didn't know

The bar will be open throughout the day and food will also be available. It is a club tradition for the president to fund a proportion of the catering and available refreshments on President’s Day. And with no match fees levied, it’s the one day of the year when we effectively pay members to play - in food and drink!

The role of club president is primarily as a figurehead, to represent the club on official occasions and promote the club locally. The president may also preside over the AGM and attend committee meetings.

From the archive: Piers Jenkins selects his Mill Hill Village all-time XI

An independent financial adviser based in Ealing, Jenkins has been an active member of Mill Hill Village for more than three decades. His debut was an away fixture in 1988 against Ruislip. "I was batting at six and scored 13 for the Sunday 3s,” he remembers. That year the top-order batsman began playing regularly for the 3rd XI, under the captaincy of Tom Wye, and he has turned out for the club ever since. In the mid-1990s he captained a Sunday 2nd XI for a season. Jenkins has scored an impressive 20 tons for Mill Hill Village Cricket Club, notching his first in 1992 - 109 not out for a Village 3rd XI against Harrow St Mary’s 2nd X. He still continues to turn out for the 4th XI and new 5th XI, with varying degrees of success.

In addition to seeing the club put together a Saturday 5th XI for the first time, the first 12 months of Jenkins’ presidency has also seen him resurrect our West Country midseason tours with great success - in July, he organised three matches in Gloucestershire with a squad of 15 players.
