Long-time member Piers Jenkins has been named as the next president of Mill Hill Village Sports Club.

Jenkins, one of the most recognisable faces at the club, took up the post on September 1.

An independent financial adviser based in Ealing, Jenkins has been an active member of Mill Hill Village since 1988. That year the top-order batsman began playing for the 3rd XI, under the captaincy of Tom Wye, and he has turned out for the club ever since. In the mid-1990s he captained a Sunday 2nd XI for a season.

This season he has made eight league appearances, for the 3s and 4s, with a top score of 30 for the 4th XI against Old Minchendenians CC 2nd XI on August 19.

The role of club president is primarily as a figurehead, to represent the club on official occasions and promote the club locally. The president may also preside over the AGM and attend committee meetings.

Jenkins said of his appointment as club president: “I was very honoured to be asked to be president of this great club and I'll try my best to fulfill my duties. I have a few innovations that I will run past the committee this winter.

Jenkins joked: “I never volunteered as a coach because I live in Ealing and can’t stand kids! So when I was politely asked to become president, I couldn't say no. In all seriousness, it’s good to give something back.”

Jenkins also paid tribute to outgoing club president Richard Downes, who is stepping down after four years in the role. Downes oversaw his last President's Day on August 27.

Jenkins said: "Richard has had a great four years overseeing a few promotions in the cricket and football sections. If I can do half as well as him, I'll be pleased."

Downes said: "I am pleased to hand over to Piers and I am sure that he will carry out the presidential role in his own unique way. Good luck, Piers!"
