Mill Hill Village Cricket Club 1st XI captain Dan Potter led the 2022 bowling averages in the Herts Cricket League’s Division 5B, it has been confirmed.

The Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League only published batting and bowling averages for last season in January 2023 - and Potter (pictured above) led the way in his division. His wickets, 20 of them, came at an average of 8.00. Potter had an even better season with the bat, scoring 505 runs at an average of 42.08, with a top score of 85 not out. He scored five 50s in 13 outings. Only Daniel Plumb (60.50) of Baldock CC and Alex Syed (45.82) of Sawbridgeworth 2nd XI averaged higher with the bat in the division, which MHVCC 1st XI topped to earn promotion.

MHVCC’s Ali Javed had the third best bowling average in the division, his 24 wickets coming at an average of 10.88. Potten End’s Mike Gurney (47 wickets at 10.23) separated Potter and Javed in second position. Mill Hill’s Obaid Ur Rehman’s 24 wickets came at 14.83, the seventh best in the division.

MHVCC 2nd XI’s Dinesh Johnson’s 387 runs at 43.00, including a 154 not out, put him fourth in the highest batting averages in Division 8B. 2nd XI vice-captain Shiban Sayed topped the division’s bowling averages, taking his 28 wickets at an average of 7.28. In second place was teammate Inthi Mazeez, whose 25 wickets came at an average of 12.24. MHVCC 2nd XI also topped their division to earn promotion.

In Regional 10 South, MHVCC 3rd XI’s Mushtaq Ahmed scored 266 runs in just six innings at an average of 44.33. Only five batsmen in the division averaged higher. Bakhtiar Sahil (32.00), captain Philip Smith (30.25) and Peter Jaffe (24.08) were also among the division’s leading batting averages.

Two MHVCC 4th XI batsmen made the Regional 12 East leaderboard: Ken Shakoor scored 292 runs at an average of 36.50 while allrounder Faraz Ahmad scored 285 runs at an average of 28.50.

To qualify, batters had to have scored 300 runs/completed six innings in the season. Bowlers had to have taken a minimum of 20 wickets. While the season finished in September, it takes time for the league to publish the official averages as it gathers the data submitted from the clubs across all the divisions.

The 2023 season gets underway on May 6. View our calendar of MHVCC’s major sporting events of the year here.
