‘We must set higher standards’: New 2nd XI skipper on promotion aims

Hamdard Jan Temori shares how trust, teamwork, and a fighting spirit will drive the club forward

What are your hopes for the new season?
My hopes for the new season are obviously to finish on a high and get the team promoted from Division 7 East in the Saracens Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League. Our shortcomings last season were mainly due to not having a consistent XI and not playing to the best of our potential. We dropped catches at crucial times and could not get over the line in some run chases. To improve we need to train hard and do the simple things like making sure we arrive at the ground on time.

What makes you the best person to be 2nd XI captain?
We must set higher standards and as captain I must utilise each player to the best of their ability, communicating well with the team on and off the field. I believe that I have the trust of my teammates and I believe that I can lead them to the best of their abilities and potential. Being a captain and an attacking bowler, I need to lead from the front and give my team a bit of fighting spirit. I'm personally a calm and composed person, always trying to improve. I’m approachable and enjoy trying to find ways to win games of cricket by understanding the game situation and reading an opposition’s game plan, knowing their strengths and weaknesses.

Tell us all about your association with the club? When did it start and how/why?
My younger brother Alam Khan played for the club for many years and he spoke very highly of the club, so in 2021 I joined the Village and I’m happy to say that since then, other quality players have joined the club through me such as Bakhtiar Sahil, Mushtaq Ahmed and lately Momin Sadozai, whose contributions are well known to the club.

What is your favourite Village memory so far?
I have many wonderful Village memories but if I had to choose one, it would be being selected 2nd XI player of the season in 2023 by my peers.

What is the most important issue presently facing Mill Hill Village? How will you help the club tackle it?
The club is managed and run by volunteers. I believe we can help in this regard to ease the burden from the shoulders of those clubmates doing the bulk of the duties - those volunteers are the true heroes behind the club’s success. I urge that more players put their hand up and support this wonderful club. There's a complete list of volunteer roles on our website (here).

Mill Hill Village 2nd XI start their league season against Potters Bar 3rd XI at home on Saturday, May 10 (1pm start).
