St Margaretsbury visited Burtonhole Lane in the 1st round of reverse fixtures, as the mid point of the season has now passed. Having dropped a hatful of catches in the opening match and batting poorly (with the exception of Naz Asif), St Margaretsbury deservedly took a win against the odds. This was the last time the 1st XI tasted defeat on a Saturday. So it was a fixture that the home team were looking forward to, as a chance to avenge the loss.
In beautiful hot conditions, it was a good toss for the home side to lose, as it meant David Overton was not forced to make a call to insert the visitors. Thoughts of a long hot afternoon were quickly dispelled as the Skipper and his opening partner Saahil Mehra fell into excellent rhythm immediately. Overton retained his preferred Pavillion end, following last week's hatrick. Which resulted in the unusual sight of Sars having to gallop up the hill from the Cow field end.
Both bowlers had pace, aggression and a somewhat unreliable surface to assist them and they were far too hot to handle. They bowled an excellent line and allowed the movement of the ball and the natural variation of the pitch to do the rest. Most the visiting batsmen fell to edges and LBWs, in other words, genuine fast bowlers wickets. David Overton finsihed with 6-38 in 9.5 overs. Saahil Mehra took 4-39 in 9 overs. The fact that St M's top scorer was their No.11, with 18 coming via a few late slogs, tells the story of a batting order in disarray.
It was straight round as tea was nowhere near ready with less than 20 overs bowled and it was still not quite ready when the match was over. It look just 9.2 overs to knock off the 77 runs required. Naz Asif rattled up 49 in customary quick time, before mis-timing one. 2 wickets were lost on the way but a hugely convincing victory was secured. 7 consecutive wins puntuated by 2 rain offs has been the Village 1st team tally since losing on the opening day. Maintaining this form will see another promotion and Divisional title secured.
