Shenley IIs became the first side in the Herts leagues to beat MHV 1st team twice. It was a comfortable victory by 88 runs, as another poor batting display saw the Village dismissed for 134 when chasing 223 for victory. There were only two scores above 15, with Marcus Cara (38) and Felix Charles (31) the only batsman to emerge with any credit. The pitch played well enough and the bowling was reasonable but not particularly penetrating, so few excuses can be found for the inability to compile a decent total. Too many players out of form is the story of the season so far.
Earlier Shenley compiled a very patient and slightly above-par total, by keeping wickets in hand and having a blast in the final overs. With the score at 152-4 after 46 overs, the Village looked well in control of the match. The opposition Captain nudged and nurdled his way to a solid 66, using up the bulk of the overs but the foundation had been laid. The lower order came to the crease with orders to 'step on the gas' and although a couple of them perished early, the number 8 swung hard, connected frequently and collected 43 in about half that number of balls. Dave Overton picked up 4-65 but in truth the best bowling came with the new ball pair of Majid Asif and Andrew Potter, who despite hitting good areas throughout their lengthy spells, were rewarded with only 1 wicket a piece.
Back to the drawing board, away at Hertingfordbury next week.
