Solid bowling performance leads to easy victory

Following the frustration of last week's rain affected result – or lack thereof – Village were hoping that lightning didn't strike twice (literally) after a torrid week of bad weather.
Thankfully the extent of the rain's impact on proceedings was a slightly sticky and damp wicket, which Old Finchleians skipper Depala duly opted to put the home side in to bat on having won the toss.
A reshuffled order saw Jay Nandha open the batting with Andy Potter, who together put on 41 for the first wicket. Potter was the first to fall, edging one behind to Depala off Depala in the 11th over having made a steady 13. Nandha timed the ball well, and kept the runs ticking along on his way to an entertaining 31, joined by skipper Danny Potter who played some classic strokes during his knock of 32 before deciding to charge down the track to Depala, only to miss the ball and get stumped, which made the Depala’s go bananas.
Number 4 bat Devraj Ray proved that cracking chat can actually keep you in a 1st XI cricket team, half-slapping one to er, Depala, at mid-on for just 2, leaving Felix Charles and Marcus Cara to put on 33 for the 6th wicket. Cara – inspired as ever by his captain – then had the same mental aberration as Potter and also went stumped Depala bowled Depala, while Charles scored freely on his way to 28.
At a crucial point in the innings, the Village middle and lower order had put in a brilliant effort to consolidate and build towards a decent total. Maj Asif and Obaid Ur Rehman (fresh off his top class one-handed catch last week) chipped in with 19 and 20 respectively, before Depala claimed both scalps as well as Saahil Mehra (the third stumping of the innings for Depala) and Dave Overton (2). That left James Thompson stranded in the middle on 14 not out, in yet another reliable showing from the wicket keeper, with the side all out for 195 after 46 overs.
That total proved to be more than enough twice over, as the Village bowlers set about their task well. Opener Saahil Mehra produced one of his best spells of the season, his disciplined line producing figures of 2 for 31 from his 10 overs. Marcus Cara also put in a top shift, claiming 2 wickets as well, for just 12 runs from 6 overs.
Maj Asif, continuing his excellent bowling form this season, produced a fantastic spell that garnered figures of 6 for 24 in 10 overs, aided by a magnificent one-handed catch at silly mid-off by the perennially handsome Devraj Ray.
The final wicket fell in the 33rd over with Old Finchleians all out for just 89, handing Village a crucial 30 points ahead of next week's match at Old Camdenians. A win there should cement promotion for Village and place them firmly in the driving seat for a title win.
