Lacklustre performance from Champions

A half decent bowling attack and a below par batting performance saw the Village 1st XI, Champions elect stumble to 164 all out in their final league game. Only Phil Smith (46) and Andy Potter (34*) showed any real resistance. Despite this, the Village, with their winning mentality, following another successful season, felt it was probably enough. When Ware were reduced to 50-5 this confidence looked entirely justified, Some good bowling from Andy Potter (4-49) and a couple from David Overton (2-55) had the visitors in trouble. A few good catches from the Village, including a stunnner at short leg from Phil Smith, were interspersed with some dropped chances.

In the end the Village were made to pay for their profligacy with the bat and in the field. The Ware lower order dug in and ground out some partnerships to frustrate the home side. Andy Brazill bowled well (2-18 in 10 overs) and together with Majid Asif and Marcus Cara, they slowed the scoring rate to a crawl. A crucial catch went down and the runs required dwindled to single figures but wickets also fell at intervals and the young tail was finally exposed. The match ebbed and flowed nicely, which made a pleasant change this year but it was largely due to the Village line up under performing on this occasion. Ware deservedly got over the line, winning by 1 wicket and secured the points they needed to avoid relegation.

It was a shame to finish the season on a loss. The match will also be remembered as the last league game 'the Nut' will ever play for the club. 20+ years of excellent service on and off the field will draw to a close, as he and his family move to Australia. We wish him all the very best.
