On an overcast day with rain expected, Lawrence won the toss and inserted Stevenage. Indecisive running accounted for the first wicket with the regular opposition captain run out by Ali Ilyas for just 3. A second run out followed 2 overs later with Ali Sayed turning from villain to hero after dropping a simple catch, he launched the ball at the bowlers end to run out the number 3.
The wicket, the rain and the long outfield made boundary scoring nigh on impossible, with only 3 boundaries scored all day! At 2 wickets down there was a realistic possibility that we would go off for rain, however the opposition batsmen were as keen to stay out as much as Lawrence was, so we stayed out in persistent drizzle. We then managed to pick up 2 quick wickets, both to Liam one bowled and one leg before. Regular wickets continued to fall throughout the innings with few runs scored. Ajay Bhatia bowled a tidy line and length picking up 2 wickets in the process and Liam finished with 5-11 off 21 overs, bowled off the reel.
At tea the drizzle returned, however it was just a short shower this time and we got back out quite quickly. Matin and Chris O'Brian started well getting us to 34-0 taking the singles on offer. However the less said about the next 6 overs the better. We collapsed to 43-6 with a succession of batsmen unwilling to try to score the remaining number of runs in singles. Eventually it took the cool heads of Lawrence Bird and George Downes to knock off the remaining 14 runs.
We remain top by 3 points with one game to go, but with promotion secured, our focus will be to go up as champions
