Club launches appeal to support Nepal's schoolchildren

MHVCC Reporters1 Jul - 17:54

Village teams up with Kathmandu University to provide aid to children in rural Nepal - thanks to the efforts of one determined club member

A Mill Hill Village Cricket Club member is joining forces with Kathmandu University to support schoolchildren in Nepal.

The fundraising initiative is the brainchild of club member Silan Panthi, who was born and raised in the Nepalese capital. The university's Project Dikshana aims to provide basic educational resources and health-related workshops to over 100 children in the region.

Donations will fund a range of support, including school bags, stationery, sports and hygiene kits, digital projectors, and life-skills workshops. Contributions of £5 can supply school essentials, while £50 supports digital literacy and health education.

The initiative is designed to improve attendance, educational outcomes, health, and digital access among pupils. It also includes a focus on environmental awareness and teamwork through sports.

Panthi, who moved to the UK in 2022 to study Electrical and Electronics Engineering and recently graduated with First Class Honours, said the project reflects a personal connection.

“As someone who grew up witnessing both the beauty and the challenges of Nepal’s education system, this project holds deep personal significance,” Panthi told millhillvillagecricketclub.co.uk. “Project Dikshana is more than just a student initiative; it’s a way to give back to communities that reflect my own roots. I believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves access to learning, dignity, and opportunity. This project is my small step toward bridging that gap.”

Panthi, who joined the Village in 2023, first learned about the project while working alongside its current leader during a TEDx event in Kathmandu.

“I’ve been actively involved in various projects and events in Nepal. One of the most notable was TEDxMaitighar, organised last year. It was through this event that I worked alongside Dipika, who is now leading Project Dikshana, which is how I heard about this initiative.”
