Mill Hill Village Cricket Club 1st XI opener Dan Potter has topped the 2023 season batting averages in a year where much of the top order struggled.
Potter, who announced at the end of the season that he was stepping down as 1st XI captain after five years in the role, averaged 40.75 in a year that the side was relegated from Saracens Herts League’s Division 4B. Potter (pictured above) scored 326 runs in nine innings with a top score of 73. He scored two fifties. Will Wyatt had the second-highest average in the 1st XI at 19.60. Potter, Aryan Thaker and Naz Asif - the club's MVP for the 2023 season according to Play-Cricket - were the only 1s players to score more than 100 runs in the season.
Only two other Mill Hill Village batters this season met the Herts League’s batting criteria of scoring 300-plus runs in a minimum of six completed innings in divisions 1-9B or 200-plus runs in a minimum of five completed innings in the regional divisions.
Pete Jaffe averaged 30.86, scoring 216 runs in seven innings for Mill Hill Village 3rd XI. Jaffe, whose top score was 76, often opened the batting with Phil Smith, the third batsman to meet the Herts League criteria. Smith, who is also stepping down from captaincy duties, averaged 25.60, scoring 256 runs in 11 innings. Smith’s top score was 82 not out.
Dinesh Johnson narrowly missed out on the Herts League criteria, scoring a total of 287 runs at an average of 41.00 for the 2nd XI with two fifties and a top score of 80 not out.
Newcomer Silan Panthi averaged 83.50 scoring 167 runs in five innings, which included two half-centuries and two not outs, playing across the 2s, 3s and 4s.
